Life beyond the classroom at IPSG

At International Primary School Groningen, learning doesn’t stop at the classroom door. Our vibrant events blend local Dutch traditions with international perspectives and everyday moments of joy, creativity, and discovery.

School garden visits

Just 2 km from our school, children take part in an annual gardening program operated by NDE. They plant, tend, and harvest their own vegetables, learning firsthand about sustainability, nature, and healthy eating. It’s a hands-on experience that connects them to the Dutch landscape and seasons.

Exploring the local area

We regularly take trips into the beautiful surroundings of Groningen, such as the Drentse forest, the fairytale-themed Sprookjesbos, or lakes like Paterswoldsemeer. In their final year (Year 6), pupils enjoy a special overnight camp which is a memorable highlight of their IPSG journey.

A school full of art

Art is central to life at IPSG. Pupils take part in workshops, work with professional artists (including our own in-house sculptor!), and learn a wide range of techniques, from printmaking to animation. We have our own kiln, and the walls of our school are filled with children’s artwork, reflecting our shared and individual stories.

Celebrating International Day

One of our most cherished events, International Day is a joyful celebration of the many cultures in our school community. Together with the International School Groningen (ISG), families and pupils share food, music, traditional dress, dance, and stories from around the world.

Embracing Dutch traditions

As part of our Dutch language curriculum, we introduce pupils to national celebrations such as Sinterklaas, Sint Maarten, Kerst (Christmas), Koningsspelen (“King’s Games”/Sports Day), and Bevrijdingsdag (Liberation Day). These festivals are celebrated in an educational and inclusive way, helping children feel at home in the Netherlands.

Home Language lunches

Each cultural group at school is invited to host a lunch, led by parents. Pupils and families prepare dishes, share stories, play games, and celebrate the richness of their heritage in a fun, relaxed setting. These gatherings build confidence and connection through language and culture. If you are interesting in hosting a Home Language lunch please get in touch with our English as an Additional Language co-ordinator: s.devries@g-s-v.nl

Plays and musicals

Each class has the opportunity to perform a play, musical, or show in our auditorium. These performances allow pupils to build confidence, express themselves, and shine in front of peers and families.
